The
Green Fair is a great family event with local music and
local produce on show. It has been running for over 20 years.
After many months of planning it is time to brush up on
networking skills, take a look at what Penwiths finest environmentally
concerned groups have to offer and be inspired to get involved.
There will be a bounty of stalls this year; local spinners
will be on hand to demonstrate their skill, delicious curries
from Ruby’s, locally grown veg, plant sales, real
nappies, handmade crafts, Cornish honey, and amongst others
an electric car will be out on the forecourt of St.John’s
Hall. There will be local musicians and dancers to entertain
us and a cafe full of local yummy homemade food. A selection
of short environmental films will be shown throughout the
day.
Penwith Environmental Network will be collecting unwanted
bras to send to a charity for reuse, please only bring in
clean unbroken bras, and they will also have a disposable
razor sharpener on their stall available to file your blunt
razors therefore keeping them out of the bin and keeping
more money in your pocket!
The fair will be opened this year by the Green party’s
parliamentary candidate Tracy Stanton. The doors open at
10am, the café ladies will be ready to serve you
a hot drink and cake, and the fair will run until 2pm. Stephanie
Hirtenstein of Penwith Environmental Network says, “We
want to inspire people to get involved in their local community
groups and become part of the positive action to reduce
the emissions of green house gases. Environmental issues
like Climate Change or pollution can seem too big and out
of one person or families reach but there are many ways
to be part of the change."
Shopping locally, growing some of our own food, and helping
to create a real community in Penwith are all small steps
towards a larger goal and better future.
We hope everyone who is in Penzance on Saturday will come
and have a look round the fair to see what local groups
are going to be doing this year. All we ask is that when
you come in and when you enjoy your food or drink you show
your appreciation of the day with a donation as the fair
is organized by volunteers, and of course that you have
fun”.
The event will be plastic bag free. The Greenfair also serves as main fundraising
event for PEN and WCFOE.
Any
organisation, charity, company or group that is working
to preserve the environment or for world justice can book
a stall (stallholders in 2009). The prices are £10 for profit-making
(commercial) organisations, and non-profit-making organisations
make a donation of what they feel they can afford.
The Café
The Green Fair café offers drinks and home-made food, where
ever possible made from locally sourced/organic/fair trade
ingredients, the cafe also caters for vegetarians, vegans
and other special diets. Price is by donation.
Entertainment
Various artists have volunteered to provide entertainment
for children and adults during the Green Fair.
In the past there were: Kites and stilt-walking by Skylark,
music by PenSamba, puppet theatre, and wool spinning demonstration.
Your Involvement
Café helpers
The Café is run by members of PEN and WCFOE, and we can
always do with an extra hand (selling food, washing up,
clearing tables, etc).
Cake or salad makers
Vegetarian or vegan cakes, quiches, other savoury morcels,
buns, salads etc are always welcome.
Door persons
We need someone at the door to collect £1 fee from
all adults not in possession of a re-usable non plastic
carrier bag! Adults in possession of a non plastic carrier
bag can come in for free! Got that? (children up to 16 are
free).
